Open New York members are the driving force behind our work. From local housing projects to statewide legislation, elections, and community-building, members take action to make New York more affordable and accessible for all.


Local Project Support

Members play a critical role in advancing local housing projects and rezonings in their communities. Members:

  • Attend and testify at public hearings

  • Submit written testimony

  • Participate in and lead canvasses

  • Help to strategies campaign plan for ground support

  • Stay informed about upcoming projects in their neighborhoods

Local engagement ensures pro-housing voices are heard where decisions are made.

Electoral Work

Members help elect leaders who will advance housing solutions. Members:

  • Canvass, flyer, and phone bank for endorsed candidates

  • Support on-the-ground efforts during election season

  • Engage in relevant ballot initiatives, including CRC ballot proposals

  • Join our electoral committee that assist in picking candidates to support

Electoral engagement ensures housing remains a top priority at every level of government.

Statewide Advocacy

Members advocate for housing policy change at the state level. Members:

  • Call, write, and meet with elected officials

  • Galvanize support on statewide housing legislation

  • Participate in Lobby Days and Rally Days in Albany

  • Help to develop a statewide day of action

Our collective advocacy strengthens the movement for pro-housing policies across New York State.

Building a Community That Matters

We are more than an advocacy organization — we are a community. Members:

  • Engage with members on our slack around the state on housing and other related issues

  • Organize and attend happy hours and social events

  • Build relationships across neighborhoods and chapters

  • Strengthen and expand our network of housing advocates

Community is the foundation of sustained impact.

Trainings & Educational Opportunities

Members learn from one another and build collective expertise. Opportunities include:

  • Leading or co-leading a training with staff or fellow members

  • Sharing professional experience and subject-matter knowledge
